A graduate of Goldsmiths University of London, Emma Townsend started interning with Arts Canteen in 2016 after a summer spent in Egypt learning Arabic. Her interest in non-western art grew from her experience of Egypt during and after the political and societal turmoil in 2011. In the aftermath that followed Emma was granted the opportunity to work with the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival in Cairo and shortly after as an arts and culture reporter for Ahram Online news. Since then Emma has continued gaining experience in the arts, from working with Crying Out Loud to the International Youth Arts Festival in London. Now as Project Coordinator for the 2017 edition of the Arab Women Artists Now (AWAN) festival, Emma is keen to learn more about contemporary emerging artists from the Middle East and North Africa.
